Automations

Answer Instagram comments, DMs and story mentions, and Threads comments, automatically.

The Automations menu answers automatically, with a tab per platform. On Instagram:

KindWhen it runs
Comment → DMSomeone comments (a keyword, or anything) on your post: a reply under the comment (optional), then a DM
DMs with a keywordSomeone sends a DM that contains (or is exactly) a keyword
Story repliesSomeone replies to your story, with given keywords or anything
Story mentionsSomeone mentions your account in their story
Automatic DM replyA DM comes in that no other automation answers, at most once per person per hour, day, or week

For example: "comment LINK and I'll send you the link by DM", answering price questions in DMs whenever they come in, or thanking people who mention you in their story.

On Threads, automations reply in the comments (see Threads: automatic comment replies). Instagram needs a Business or Creator account. Automations are part of the Starter, Basic, and Pro plans (trial included). If the plan goes back to Free, every automation stops until a plan is active again.

Creating an automation

Click Create automation, pick a template or Start from scratch, then fill in three parts:

When someone comments

  • Which posts: All posts, Specific posts (pick from your posts), or Next post (the first post published after the automation is turned on).

If the comment

  • Contains one of the keywords (upper and lower case are the same), is Exactly a keyword, or Anything for every comment.
  • Once per person: someone who comments several times gets one DM. On by default.
  • Include replies within comments: also answer replies under other comments.

Do this

  • Send a DM: write the message. Text only, but links are fine. The preview beside it shows how it looks.
  • Also reply to the comment (optional): write a few variations. Tebar picks one at random each time, so the replies don't all look the same.
  • Reply delay: see below.
  • Mark as automated message (optional): adds "(Pesan otomatis)", Indonesian for "automated message", at the end of the DM.

Click Save and turn on. Only comments that come in after the automation is turned on are answered; older comments are left alone.

You can also create one from the composer: when writing an Instagram post, use the Comment → DM chip. That automation applies to that post only and starts once the post is published.

Threads: automatic comment replies

Threads has no DMs through its API, so Threads automations only reply in the comments. Open the Threads tab, pick a template (Reply to comments with keywords or Reply to every comment on the next post), then set it like Comment → DM: which posts, the keywords, and whether replies count.

So Threads does not hide the replies as spam:

  • Write 3 to 5 versions of the reply (up to 500 characters). Tebar picks one at random, never the one used for the reply before.
  • The wait is Relaxed (2-8 minutes, the default) or Natural (30 seconds-2 minutes) only.
  • The same person gets one reply per post.
  • At most 30 automatic replies an hour per account. Comments past that are skipped, not saved for later.
  • Avoid links in the replies; point to your bio. Automatic replies with links are hidden more often.

In the composer, the Threads tab has a Comment reply chip for the post being made.

Automations for DMs and stories

Pick their template under DMs and stories, then adjust it:

  • DMs with a keyword and Story replies: keywords as in Comment → DM. Story replies can also answer Anything.
  • Automatic DM reply: choose Every hour, Once a day, or Once a week for the same person. It is skipped when the DM matches a keyword automation, or when you answered that conversation in the last 5 minutes.
  • Heart their message: likes the customer's message before the reply, as in the Instagram app.
  • Once per person is off by default for these kinds, so later questions are still answered.

Only messages that come in after the automation is turned on are answered, and one message triggers one automation: a story mention first, then a story reply, then keywords, and last the automatic DM reply. Replies go out within 24 hours of the message, as Instagram requires, and show in the Inbox.

The Instagram account must allow messages. Accounts connected before the Inbox existed need reconnecting first.

  • Link buttons: under the DM, tap Add a link button to add up to 3 buttons (titles of 20 characters at most). With buttons, the DM takes 640 characters at most. If Instagram refuses buttons in a comment reply, the DM still goes as text with the links written under it.
  • Follow first: people first get an ask to follow with one button (for example "I follow you"). When they tap it, Tebar checks with Instagram. Followers get the DM right away; the others get the If they don't follow yet message with the same button. For DM and story automations, following is checked right away, no tap needed. The Send the link to followers only template turns it on.

The automation's page shows how many people got the DM after following. If Instagram doesn't say whether someone follows, the DM is not sent; they are asked to follow again.

Delays, so it doesn't read as a bot

A reply that appears one second after a comment reads as a bot. Tebar waits a random moment before answering:

OptionBefore replyingThe DM goes out
Fast5–30 secondsright after the comment reply
Natural30 seconds–2 minutes20–60 seconds after the reply
Relaxed2–8 minutes1–3 minutes after the reply

New automations use Natural.

Instagram's limits

  • One comment can be answered with one DM. Once the person replies to your DM, the conversation continues in the Inbox.
  • A DM can only be sent for comments less than 7 days old.
  • Tebar sends at most 600 automatic DMs per hour per account, below Instagram's limit. The rest are skipped with Hourly sending limit reached.

Following the results

Each automation's card shows how many times it was Triggered, Delivered, and Skipped. The switch on the card turns it on or off.

History lists every comment it answered, with its status: Waiting, Delivered, Skipped, or Failed, and the reason, for example:

  • Already sent to this person: because of Once per person.
  • This comment was already answered by DM: a DM for that comment already exists, from Tebar or another app.
  • Comment older than 7 days or Comment was deleted.
  • This person can't receive messages: that person's privacy settings refuse DMs.
  • Account needs reconnecting: open Accounts and reconnect Instagram.
  • More than 24 hours since the customer's message or You just answered this conversation (automatic DM reply).

DMs sent by automations also show in the Inbox, so you can carry on the conversation when the person replies.

You can also create and manage automations with AI, for example "create an automation: people who comment PRICE on my next post get the price list by DM, with a relaxed delay". See Tools.
